In the homespun days, food was usually fried in a big cast-iron metal pot. But modern times demand simpler solutions. The Presto GranPappy electric deep fryer fits on a countertop and is so easy to use. Just add oil, plug it in, and in 15 minutes it's heated up and ready to fry. Its sleek, black bucket shape matches form to function-- simple and classic.

The GranPappy holds up to six cups of oil or three pounds of shortening, and it can accommodate up to six servings of food at a time. The internal thermostat keeps the oil at the optimum frying temperature. An accompanying scoop, slotted for draining, is for lifting food in and out or for turning food halfway through the cooking time. The power cord has a magnetic safety connection, so that if the unit is jostled during cooking, the cord will disconnect, shutting power off immediately. After straining the used oil, it can be poured back into the unit and stored, covered by the accompanying snap-on plastic lid.

After frying, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before attempting to empty oil. Wash the GranPappy with warm, sudsy water and dry it thoroughly; it is not immersible. To preserve the nonstick finish, inside and out, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The Presto GranPappy measures 8 by 8-1/2 inches. Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. A simple instruction and recipe sheet is enclosed. --Garland Withers

Not so hot3
I recently purchased the GranPappy Electric Deep Fryer to make home-made fish and chips. It works great - with restaurant quality frying every time. Although the product is great, I was disapointed with what I actually got when I pulled the Fryer from the box. Basically, the GranPappy is a glorified bucket to hold your oil. It is no better or worse than your average saucepan.

You get a sharp metal holed ladle to scoop your food out of the fryer, which is kind of stupid considering the interior is coated with non-stick stuff - and metal is a big NO NO for non-stick surfaces. You also get a lid for your bucket of oil (same as a lid for your saucepan?).

The Granpappy is pretty small too - big enough for fish and chips for two - done in 2-3 batches. The actual look of the Fryer is nice - plain black with a handle, but nothing special.

I would actually recommend instead buying a deep fryer with a wire draining insert that lifts in and out - therefore you can safely place your food in the fryer, and remove it when food is cooked and drain the oil much easier from your food.

Be careful using the Granpappy, as there is no way to get your food into the hot oil safely and without hot oil spurting up onto your arms, as you just have to drop it in and hope for the best. When removing food, the small wire holed ladle releases some of the oil, but no where near enough.

Expect to clog your arteries with this little number. Basically what you pay for is what you get, and I guess the GranPappy is okay for the price - but you could do the same in a saucepan.

Great and convenient appliance5
I have just ordered another Fry-Daddy. This will be the third one that I have had over the years. It is lighweight and is just a pot that holds oil as someone said. It is so convenient and not heavy, it makes it easy to store if you do not have countertop room. There are all kinds of deep fryers, but none that does a better job than this one. I would recommend it to anyone.

It was a Christmas gift, truly enjoyed by my grandson who loves to cook (with supervision). It's easy to store, and able to keep the oil in its container for several uses. Bigger than the GranDaddy so you can cook more at one time. It's great. Have one myself and it has been with us for years.
